Got doubts about starting your VA business?
We hear the same doubts and questions all the time inside The VA Hangout. So let’s cut through the noise and give you the real answers.Â
“I don’t have an admin background – can I still be a VA?”
Absolutely YES. In fact, we encourage you to stop calling yourself “admin” in the first place. Being a VA isn't typing minutes and managing diaries (unless that's what you're great at).
It’s about taking whatever skills you already have, whether that’s tech, marketing, customer service, events, finance, social media, or something completely different, and packaging them up as services businesses need. Do what you’re good at, do what you enjoy, and stop worrying about whether it “counts.”
“But I don’t know the first thing about running a business…”
Neither did we when we started. Nobody pops out of the womb knowing about invoices, contracts, or client onboarding. The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone. The internet is full of resources, and communities like The VA Hangout exist exactly for this reason. We’ll help you with the how-tos, the what-ifs, and the oh-sh*t moments.
“My life is busy – kids, school runs, after-school clubs. Can I actually fit it in?”
Yes. This is why so many people do become VAs – because it’s flexible. You set your hours. You choose your clients. As long as you’re upfront about your availability, you’ll find clients who are fine with that. And the best bit? Your business will flex and evolve as your life does.Â
“What if I don’t have clients straight away?”
That’s normal. Building a business isn’t instant. But there are clients out there looking for support right now, and they don’t care whether you’ve been a VA for 10 years or 10 minutes. They care that you have the skills and expertise to solve a problem for them. You’ll find tips and resources in our blog to help you spot opportunities, market yourself, and build confidence as you go.
“Is being a self-employed VA secure?”
We’re not going to sugar-coat it, running a successful business takes hard work and dedication. But once you’re up and running and you have multiple clients, if you lose one you’ve still got others to fall back on, and you’ll always be able to replace them. If you’re employed in one job and you lose it, that’s everything gone.
So yes, you’ll need to keep working to find and secure clients, and clients will come and go. But being self-employed means you are in control of your income.Â
“Is the VA market saturated?”
The VA world is growing fast, but here’s the truth: the one thing no one else has is you. Think of it like walking down your local high street, there are multiple hairdressers, barbers, and nail bars, but you’ll always return to the one that feels right for you.
Our advice? Get clear on the services you offer, be your true self, and you’ll attract the right clients.
“Is working from home all day lonely?”
shoutout to all the introverts who love working solo – for you this is the dream 🙌🏻.
But if you thrive on being part of a team and need connection, there are plenty of ways to get it:
-
Networking – online & in-person
-
VA communities & memberships
-
Find a VA buddy to co-work with (virtually or in real life)
-
Work with clients who already have a team – you’ll naturally be included in team comms, online meetings and project updates, which can give you that sense of belonging while still running your own business.
“Isn’t starting a business a big risk?”
Yes. But without risk, we stay stuck. Ask yourself: would you rather take a chance on building something for yourself, or spend years wishing you had? Every successful business owner started with that same leap of faith and it’s often the biggest risk that leads to the biggest reward.
So, if you’ve read this far and you’re still thinking about becoming a VA, here’s your sign. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start, you just need the right tools, support, and community around you.
